ABACUS MATHS
The abacus is a simple, ancient tool used for arithmetic calculations. It typically consists of a rectangular wooden frame with a series of vertical rods or wires, on which beads slide up and down. The beads are divided into two groups by a horizontal bar: the upper deck (heaven) and the lower deck (earth). Here’s a brief explanation of how an abacus works and how it’s used for basic arithmetic operations:
Structure of the Abacus
- Frame: The wooden or plastic structure that holds the rods and beads.
- Rods: Vertical rods that hold the beads.
- Beads: Small objects that slide up and down the rods.
- Divider (Horizontal Bar): Separates the upper deck from the lower deck.
Types of Abacuses
- Chinese Abacus (Suanpan): Has 2 beads on the upper deck and 5 beads on the lower deck.
- Japanese Abacus (Soroban): Typically has 1 bead on the upper deck and 4 beads on the lower deck.
Basic Usage
- Value of Beads:
- In the Chinese abacus, each bead in the upper deck represents 5 units, while each bead in the lower deck represents 1 unit.
- In the Japanese abacus, each bead in the upper deck represents 5 units, while each bead in the lower deck represents 1 unit.
- Counting: To represent a number, beads are moved towards the horizontal bar. For example, moving one lower bead up represents the number 1. Moving one upper bead down represents the number 5.
The abacus is not only a powerful computational tool but also an educational instrument that enhances understanding of the base-10 number system and mental arithmetic skills.
Our Program trains the children in mental arithmetic using ABACUS as a tool for performing calculations.Mental arithmetic deals with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division operations that children can do with the help of visualisation concepts.
This will improve child’s photography skills, creative thinking and the problem solving skills. It activates left and right brain triggering whole brain development. It removes the fear of math right from childhood.
